History

In the early years, interest group committees were known as Sections. The Regulatory & Legislative Section was formed in 1990 by John Benton, then of Transamerica; Richard Rogers, then of the Illinois Department of Insurance; and John Reiersen, then of Eagle Insurance Group. The purpose was to provide CPCUs attending National Association of Insurance Commissioner (NAIC) meetings with a forum for the discussion of regulatory developments and issues. The Regulatory & Legislative Section was not formally certified by the CPCU Society until 1991. For many years, the Regulatory & Legislative Section Committee met at each quarterly NAIC meeting. For the first eight or nine years, the Regulatory & Legislative Section either sponsored seminars on hot topics at NAIC meetings or hosted regulatory round tables where industry professionals had the opportunity to take part in one-on-one discussions with regulators about particular state issues affecting their companies. These round tables are an annual event at Insurance Regulatory Examiners Society Foundation events, but the Regulatory & Legislative Section was the first group to initiate this engagement between regulators and the industry. Today, the Regulatory & Legislative Interest Group (Regs & Legs) meets at the CPCU Society Annual Meeting, and it conducts monthly conference calls.

John Reiersen served as the first editor of the newsletter for a number of years.
